Random/structured CrossFit – by Asger Frøsig Sørensen
Name: Asger Frøsig Sørensen
Age: 27 years old
City: Copenhagen, Denmark (currently Canada B.C)
Trains the following places: Crossfit Copenhagen, Butcher’s lab, Crossfit Taranis, Victoria Uni. sports complex.
How often do you train? 4 times per week. + once or twice in the pool as active rest.
How is your training structured? My training is currently built around Jim wendler’s 5-3-1 system, but with oly lifts at the start of the workout, and assisting excercises at the end. This incl. 2 short heavy metcons per week. To get strong takes time, so I’ll be on this strengt biased program at least until the end of 2012.
Where have you gotten your inspiration from? My program is put together by bits and pieces. It’s originaly from Gant Grime’s hybrid program, which is fun to do, but a bit random. I’ve put in the 5-3-1 part, since it works very well (I have had very good result with it previously), and it gives me the structure, that I’m looking for.
What are your best competition results?
-Christmas challenge 2010: 1st (Danish competition)
- Church battle 2011: 1st (Danish competition)
Future goals: Stay injurie-free (very unlikely but a man needs to have dreams). And get stronger, MUCH stronger!!
What are your thoughts about random/structured CrossFit-training? For the “Average Joe”, the random training in the boxes are fine. It’s a great alternative to conventional fitness, and as long as the coaches know what they are doing, I can’t think of a better alternative to get overall fit. If one has the dream of becoming a great crossfit athlete, there has to be more structure in the program, which for most people means a lot more heavy lifting. With random training comes random results!
Do you think that CrossFit-boxes should offer more personalized training? I definetly think that CrossFit boxes should offer more personalized training programs, but there are 3 major obstacles:
1) A great program isn’t worth shit, if the one doing them can’t perform and spot the lifts and movements correctly (and that just takes a long time to learn).
2) Not many have the desire to train intensly, and often on their own. It’s the social aspect and the fact that they are being told what to do, and doing it together with others that gives them the drive.
3) Most people (at least in Denmark) belive that any fitness membership all inclusive shouldn’t cost more than 200DKK/month. That kind of limits the ressources, that they will be offered.
Its not about who’s elite and who isn’t. Its about what one aspires to be that makes the difference. If one wants to be great, then work hard and smart (structured) and good things will happen. If training is merely a tool to keep the belly at a moderat size, then by all means, do random crossfit-classes, smile and enjoy life!
